Generally it is in the tribal tradition that one is likely to find most of the pictorial rugs.
The main reason for this seems to be that in the tribal tradition lack of symmetry is not considered to be a fault, but is seen as the weaver's innovation. And because most live forms, stylized or otherwise, are difficult to weave into a rug, a tribal weaver, being free from the constraints of symmetry is more likely to use his/her imagination to throw in live forms wherever space allows.
The most common pictorial motifs are:
a. The Shikargah. This is the depiction of a hunting scene, and there are many variations of this. In this design live forms are not stylized.
b.The Omar Khayam design. This is named after the famed Tribal astronomer and mathematician who also wrote poems on love and wine. In this design it is common to see live forms of a man and a woman, normally accompanied with a jug of wine and a goblet. A variation of this is when a minstrel may be depicted playing a musical instrument.
c. The Laila Majnun design. This is named for an epic love story very popular in many muslim countries, and shows a man and a woman in different poses/postures.
d. War Scenes. After the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan in 1979 a completely new "genre" of rugs entered the market. These depicted battle tanks, helicopters, fighter planes, hand grenades, rifles etc, as the weavers tried to weave into their rugs what they were seeing around them. Moving slightly away from this, it was not uncommon to see uniformed generals depicted in some of the rugs. And in the same tradition, when unarmed combat like judo and karate became very popular, scenes of such combat also began to be woven into the rugs.
e.Panoramas, Palaces, and Landscapes. After the Afghan weavers had taken the liberty to show military hardware in their rugs, some began weaving landscapes and palaces in their rugs as well. Though these rugs and those showing tanks and helicopters etc are not being woven today, some of these may still be found in the market.
