    Description

    For sale is an
    Old Antique
    ENGLISH
    GEORGIAN
    STERLING SILVER
    LONDON, 1814
    TEA  STRAINER / BASKET
    .
This is a wonderful and quite rare Antique English George III period Basket Tea Strainer.
    Phipps & Robinson.
    London, 1814.
The side is fully Hallmarked with English Solid Silver Hallmarks for 1814 (the London mark of origin is absent, as sometimes found).
    The Maker's Mark of
Thomas Phipps, Edward Robinson & James Phipps (TP over ER over JP) is present (the bottom initials are quite rubbed but the mark is still good and legible).
The Swing Handle and Spring Pin seem to be unmarked.
English Tea Basket Strainers of this period are Quite Rare.
    In
The Collector's Dictionary of the Silver and Gold of Great Britain and North America
, Michael Clayton has only a very short paragraph about Tea Strainers and mentions an example from 1822. This one is eight years earlier.
The removable pin on the end allows the tea strainer to fit in the spout of a teapot, as shown.
Plain form with Thread / Reeded decoration on the top edge.
    The bowl is nicely pierced.
A fine addition to a silver collection
    !
The Tea Basket is Oval in Shape (we aren't sure if it was originally circular).
It measures just over 1 3/4 inches (4.5 cm) by 1 5/8 inches (4 cm).
    No
    monograms or initials.
For reference, the Total Weight is 16 grams (0.51 troy oz).
The rim is very slightly pushed down in one area (just to the left of the hallmarks- this is very minor).
The base of the bowl has a small dent (it is not very noticeable owing to the piercing).
The circular jump ring at the top of the tea basket is slightly open (again, a very minor issue).
There is some overall minor wear from age and gentle use and handling (see photos).
Otherwise, the Tea Strainer is in Very Good Condition
    - there are
    no other
    condition issues or damage.
