    Description

A rare, attractive, bright-cut decorated pointed eye-shaped label with wriggle work around the perimeter. This design is very eye catching and the deep curved shape makes this a very fine label. The gauge is fairly thin, so the inscription has caused some small pinholes (see photographs against the light). The pinholes are not very visible from the front. The old interlinked figure of eight chain is probably original. I have seen an identical label to this in a Wine Label Circle article, that one apparently signed on the back by JL. This was attributed in the article to John Lautier of London, but various collectors felt that it was possibly Irish, or by John Langlands of Newcastle. Around this period, Gin was usually called GENEVA or Genever. The large lettering indicates an early label. The eye shape design is very rare, and the hand hammered deeply convex back makes this a very attractive label. There are some minor surface scratches as you would expect from normal use. Unfortunately the label is unsigned but some knowledgeable experts consider that the design is either Irish, or Provincial The condition is crisp and the old figure of eight link chain is undamaged, and unmarked.
