    Description

    An interesting "Rococo" silver Sauce label for MINT (Mint Sauce), or Mint Flavoring for tea. The name is rarely found, although there are references in "Sauce Labels" (Professor John Salter) Page 57 (reference to an oval Rococo MINT Sauce label in the Marshall Collection), and "Boudoir Labels" (also by Professor Salter) Page 115. The label is marked for 800 silver, added word "Germany" and the importers' initials B&Z for Bucholz & Zelt, New York (22 West 48th. Street). In accordance with the McKinley Tariff Act of 1890, the importer may have added the word "Germany" and "800" next to the  crown mark, the scythe mark of J.D.Scleissner & Sohne, Hanau, and the gothic "e" date mark (possibly a false mark for 1766 or 1772). The rococo design of the label suggests an earlier date than 1900, but a number of Hanau silver items were made with pseudo marks. An interesting label worthy of further research. There are some minor surface scratches as you would expect from normal use. The condition is crisp. The chain is not an old figure of eight link chain but could be original. The chain is unmarked and undamaged. The label is of very good gauge. Other information:
    * Marked B&Z, Crown, 800, scythe?, gothic e in a shield, and Germany. The 800 and the word Germany may have been added by the importer Bucholz & Zelt..
