    Description

    Advertising Envelopes from
    HENZE'S OLD ROCK BAKERY CO
    St Louis, Missouri
    (1852-1932)
Located at 417 Lucas Avenue this business originated as a house in 1846 in what was then a fasionable part of St. Louis. The "Old Rock Bakery" became a household phrase in the city. Demand for crackers and hardtack for the Civil War Army brought rise to a factory across the street. It was founded by German immigrant, F.W. Henze. He partnered with George Gaertner in 1868 and three years later, he became the owner. Gaertner added a well designed delivery horse-drawn wagon and two lunch rooms were added in 1868, one exclusively for women. It's pure German rye bread and pastries were celebrated. Eventually business ebbed in its section of town and customers yearned for more modern establishments leading to the firm's bankruptcy and closure in 1932.
