    Description

This small basket is in wonderful condition, especially given its age. These smaller baskets were referred to as "sweetmeat" baskets and were used for serving small candies or pastries, i.e. anything sweet. This basket was made by London silversmiths Samuel Herbert & Co., and there are no breaks in the lovely pierced design. The feet seem secure, and there is only the slightest of a wobble in the base. There is an image of an ox engraved in the base of the bowl.
This basket measures about 5 1/2" tall with the handle, 2 1/8" tall without, 5 1/2" wide, and 6 1/2" long. It weighs 228 grams of sterling silver.
